Mary, Help of Christians Church was born from the determination of a growing
Catholic community in early 1921. Originally housed temporarily in halls at
different locations, St Mary’s obtained independent status as a parish in 1942.
A permanent church building was completed on the present site in 1965. The
narthex, which gives the church its unique design, was added in 1993. There are
two special areas in our church, which offer parishioners additional quiet
places for rest and reflection - The Blessed Sacrament Chapel and the Memorial
Garden.
The Blessed Sacrament Chapel was opened in 1982. It contains
the metal tabernacle that was originally used by the
Presentation Sisters and earlier, the Josephite Sisters. The
chapel is used for a number of activities and for contemplation.
Entry to the Chapel is outside via the left side when facing the
main church building.
The Memorial Garden was officially opened in May 2001. The
garden is paved with pavers engraved with the names of departed
loved ones. Surrounded by beautiful plantings, the layout and
seating of the garden provided a tranquil place for meditation
and repose.
From small beginnings, the parish developed a proud history
of ‘being there’ for all by:
- Spreading the Good News of Jesus
- Caring, sharing ministering and outreaching
- Providing a home away from home for many new arrivals
- Providing spiritual and pastoral care
- Educating our children in faith and curriculum
- Providing social opportunities for mix, mingle and make
new friends
The architecture of St Mary’s retains a modern feel but the
fundamental design of our church rests in the members of our
parish and the many people who have collectively brought the
church building and community to reality. Said of St Mary’s
parish by Father John Pierce, RAAF Chaplain WWII
A parish is like a home,
we live together,
we must work together
and, above all, we must pray together.
Then God will surely bless our labours.
These words continue to be true as we welcome all to our
parish and hope you will find with us fellowship, friendship and
the peace and love of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
